Menopause Acne

Hysterectomy and the Link to Acne

Sudden menopause, caused by a hysterectomy, can send hormones into a tailspin quickly.  This rapid hormonal shift can cause women to experience acne and breakouts, even if they have never previously been prone to skin breakouts.

At menopause, the androgen/estrogen ratios shift in favor of androgens (masculine hormones).  Testosterone, a product of the DHEA hormone pathway, can cause increased facial hair, male pattern baldness -- and yes, overactive sebaceous glands, leading to acne.

Until your hormones reach some sort of balance, chances are you will be needing some extra help for your stressed out skin.  In addition to topical creams and gels, you may get some relief with natural hormone replacement.
